What Plumbing Work Costs in Nashville

Published cost guides give a useful planning range, but a Nashville quote depends on the actual fault, the access and the hour you call. Use the ranges below to sense-check a written quote, not to predict one.

Planning ranges from national cost guides

Prices checked 2026-09-25. These are national figures from Angi's published cost guides. They are not Nashville quotes and they are not prices set by our providers. Use them to judge whether a quote is in a normal band.

  • A plumbing repair visit: a typical project costs between $182 and $501, and hourly rates run from $45 to $200. National data from Angi's plumbing repair cost guide, updated March 17, 2026.
  • Clearing a clog or snaking a drain: $95 to $500 nationally, from the same Angi guide. A main-line job that adds a camera inspection or digging falls outside that band.
  • Replacing a water heater: $882 to $1,826 for a tank-style heater and $1,400 to $3,900 for a tankless one, national data from Angi's water heater replacement cost guide, updated July 20, 2026.

Compare the source and the visit charge

The figures above are national planning data, not observed Nashville prices. Before comparing them with a local estimate, ask whether the visit or dispatch fee, parts, emergency scheduling, permit, wall repair and tax are included. Keep the source update date with the number; a new year in this page's title should follow a substantive source check, not a cosmetic date change.

What pushes a Nashville quote up or down

  • The hour. Angi's guide says emergency plumbers typically charge 1.5 to 3 times their normal rate at night, on weekends and on holidays. If the water is off and nothing is spreading, a daytime visit is usually cheaper.
  • Access. A pipe in an open crawl space costs less to reach than one under a slab or behind tile.
  • Permits. Metro Codes says a like-for-like residential 50-gallon water heater replacement generally needs no permit, while a replacement that changes fuel type does. A fuel switch also tends to add gas or electrical work.
  • Whose pipe it is. Where Metro Water is the utility, it owns the service line from the main to the meter. A leak on that side should be reported to Metro on 615-862-4600 before you pay a plumber to dig.
  • Scope creep. A drain clearing, a camera inspection and a sewer repair are three different jobs, and each can be quoted separately.

How to compare two quotes

Ask each plumber for the same items in writing: the fault they found, the parts and labor, any trip or diagnostic fee and whether it is credited toward the repair, permit handling, cleanup, patching of opened walls, and the warranty on parts and labor. A lower total that leaves out patching or a permit is not a cheaper job. For a bigger decision, such as repiping or a new water heater, a second written quote is reasonable.

Ask about the trip or diagnostic fee on the call, before the visit.

Common questions

Angi's national data puts plumber hourly rates between $45 and $200, depending on the plumber's skill level and the job. Prices checked 2026-09-25. Ask your technician for their own rate, how they bill partial hours and whether a trip fee applies.

Emergency visits at night, on weekends or on holidays typically run 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate, according to Angi's national guide. If you can stop the water with a shutoff and nothing is spreading, ask whether waiting for a daytime slot changes the price.

One may cover only cleaning, while another includes a camera, locating, excavation, pipe replacement, permits and surface restoration. Ask each plumber to show the defect they found, the section of line they will work on, the method and what is excluded. Compare the same scope and warranty before deciding.

Not before calling the utility. Where Metro Water supplies the house, Metro owns the line from the main to the meter and takes leak reports 24 hours a day on 615-862-4600. The owner is responsible from the meter to the house, so that stretch is a plumber's job.

Not always. A quote made before your technician opens a wall or runs a camera can change once the real fault is visible. Ask how changes will be priced and approved, and get the revised scope in writing before extra work starts.
